The star of Aigai
The star with eight, twelve ,or sixteen rays is a beloved ancient Greek decorative element. Closely connected with the dynastic myth of the Temenids ,the gold ''sunburst'' appeals in the royal tombs of Aigai in the 5th century BC and becomes the royal emblem under Philip II and Alexander the Great .Used as a speaking sign on the Macedonian shields and coins , the ''sun'' became Macedonian symbol par excellence.
