Athenian tetradrachm or “Athenian Owl” The goddess is depicted on the front side of this silver coin. On the other side appears the sacred bird of the goddess, the owl and the inscription ΑΘΕ (ATHE), the abbreviation for the name of the city of Athens. This coin became known as the “owl”, and circulated in many countries. It was especially widespread from the heyday of Athens in the 5th century BC until the times of Alexander the Great.
