Terracotta Figurine of Type Ψ (Psi-Type)
Terracotta Female Figurine of Type Ψ (Psi-Type) Steiria, Attica, 13th century BC Late Mycenaean period National Archaeological Museum, Athens (inv. no. 3866) Plaster cast replica This figurine belongs to the typologically defined “Psi-type”, named after the resemblance of the figure’s upraised arms to the Greek letter Ψ. Made of terracotta, the figurine is schematically rendered and retains traces of painted decoration in dark pigment on a light-colored surface. Psi-type figurines are commonly interpreted as votive or cultic figures, possibly goddesses or priestesses, and are typically found in funerary or sanctuary contexts during the Late Bronze Age. The raised arms may signify an act of worship or ritual gesture.
