Head of Nike

It belonged to one of the three Nikes that adorned the corners (acroteria) of the Temple of Artemis at Epidaurus. The figure is rendered with idealized features, a serene expression, and soft modeling, all hallmarks of Late Classical sculpture. Her wavy hair frames the face with harmony and grace. Nikes, as winged goddesses of victory, were associated with the bestowal of honors and were commonly dedicated in sanctuaries to celebrate military or athletic triumphs.
