Standing male figure playing the double-flute.
Marble Cycladic Figurine of a Man Playing the Double-Flute From Keros, 2400–2200 BC National Archaeological Museum, Athens (inv. no. 3910) Plaster Cast Replica This exceptionally rare Cycladic figurine represents a standing male musician playing the double-flute (aulos). Carved from white Cycladic marble, the figure stands on a rectangular base with bent arms raised toward the face. The head and bodily proportions follow the abstract and minimalist style typical of Early Cycladic sculpture. Musician figurines are notable exceptions within the Cycladic corpus and are often interpreted in ritual contexts—either as participants in ceremonial acts or as symbolic representations of sacred roles. The purity of the marble and the composed, frontal posture of the figure underscore its solemn and possibly votive character.
