Eros and Psyche
Group of Eros and Psyche Provenance: Pella, Macedonia Date: Hellenistic period, 2nd–1st century BC Material: Terracotta, mould-made; traces of polychromy (prob.) Museum: Archaeological Museum of Pella Inventory number: 81183 Small group showing winged Eros embracing Psyche—the young maiden marked by butterfly wings, her defining attribute. The tender gesture, soft modelling and fluid drapery place the piece within Hellenistic coroplastic art, akin to the “Tanagra” repertoire. Such groups served in household cult, as votive offerings or grave goods, embodying nuptial symbolism and the union of Love with the Soul.
