Spinalonga is an islet in the Gulf of Elounda in Crete. It was fortified in the Hellenistic period and later by the Venetians. In 1715 it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks and inhabited by Muslims. With the establishment of the Leprosy Hospital in 1903-1957, the islet was inhabited exclusively by displaced lepers, making it a symbol of suffering.
